Project Overview

Ripon’s swimming was running down. The pool at the old Spa Baths was near the end of its life, and the leisure centre on Dallamires Lane needed to take over as the city’s main place to swim, train and meet.

Harrogate Borough Council extended the centre with a new wet side: a 25m community pool, a changing village and a health suite, with the existing dry facilities refurbished around it. A bridge link joins the extension to the original building and forms a new front entrance, so the heating, ventilation, power and water services had to work across old and new as a single building.

CAD21 designed those services, working with Willmott Dixon under the SCAPE framework. Planning set a condition that at least 10% of the building’s energy come from renewable sources. A combined heat and power unit and rooftop solar panels were specified to meet it.

Opened in 2022 and named after Ripon-born Olympic diver Jack Laugher, the centre gave the city around 70% more water space than the old baths and reached a BREEAM Very Good rating.
